Slapping hockey pucks around the ice rink, cracking balls around the golf course and pounding out a 65-hour work week used to be commonplace for Barry Goudy. Then the unthinkable happened: doctors told the Southgate, Michigan businessman he had multiple sclerosis (MS).
“It was tough, and I mean it was tough,” recalls Goudy after an MRI and spinal tap confirmed his worst fears about the autoimmune disease attacking his brain and central nervous system. “You sit and cry and you wonder why me?” For Barry, that meant not knowing if he would wake up in the morning and be able to walk or see. “Then you look around and think, ‘just tell me how I can fight it and we can do it.’ And that’s what we did.”
After the initial shock of the diagnosis, Barry’s wife Anne went to work devouring all the information she could find about MS, sometimes known as “the great crippler of young adults.” As the disease progressed, Barry would go through days and weeks where extreme fatigue took a toll, his legs numbed and his vision blurred.

A Dutch scientist has created ‘meat’ from stem cells – and wants Heston Blumenthal to cook the first batch. Steve Connor reports on the ultimate in culinary experimentation.
The world’s first hamburger made with a synthetic meat protein derived from bovine stem cells will be publicly consumed this October after being prepared by a celebrity chef, according to the inventor of the artificial mince.
Heston Blumenthal is the favourite to be asked to cook the €250,000 (£207,000) hamburger, which will be made from 3,000 strips of synthetic meat protein grown in fermentation vats. Dr Mark Post, of Maastricht University in the Netherlands, said the anonymous backer of his research project had not yet decided who would get to eat the world’s most expensive hamburger, which will unveiled at a ceremony in Maastricht.

A renowned clinical scientist and researcher at the University of Westminster, London, Hollands took part in the first Vatican-sponsored conference to analyze adult stem-cell technology, which was held in Vatican City in early November.
Organized by the Pontifical Council for Culture and NeoStem Inc., a developer and manufacturer of stem-cell therapies, the symposium drew experts from around the world.
Hollands spoke more about the advantages of adult stem-cell research in an interview Nov. 10.

Another of the participants attending the conference in the Vatican on adult stem cell research is Doctor David Prentice, Professor of Molecular Genetics and Bioethics expert at the John Paul II Institute of the Catholic University of America. Unlike the much-hyped embryonic stem cells, he says adult stem cells are already proving their worth in clinical trials but this important message is not getting out to the general public. Dr Prentice says ” very few people .. including some profesionals … understand that adult stem cells are already treating thousands of people every year for dozens of different of diseases… and the list is growing each year.”
Asked about the potential for adult stem cells, Dr Prentice replies: “I really believe the sky is the limit for adult stem cells” but says the sector needs more publicity and more resources to realise its potential. When it comes to the use of embryonic stem cells, he says, apart from the ethical issues, they “still have many practical problems” including….. “tumour growth and forming the wrong tissues in the wrong place in the body.”

Scientists will no longer be able to patent stem cell work which involves the destruction of human embryos after a landmark ruling last month.
Commentators welcomed the ruling, with one bioethics group saying it was a “triumph of ethical standards over commercial interest”.
The decision, from the European Court of Justice (ECJ), now means scientists may be encouraged to divert their attention to adult stem cells.

University of Illinois researchers determined that an adult stem cell present in muscle is responsive to exercise, a discovery that may provide a link between exercise and muscle health. The findings could lead to new therapeutic techniques using these cells to rehabilitate injured muscle and prevent or restore muscle loss with age.
Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) in skeletal muscle have been known to be important for muscle repair in response to non-physiological injury, predominantly in response to chemical injections that significantly damage muscle tissue and induce inflammation. The researchers, led by kinesiology and community health professor Marni Boppart, investigated whether MSCs also responded to strain during exercise, and if so, how.
